Free Crochet Pattern: Sunshine Dishcloth

The Sunshine Dishcloth crochet pattern is one of my favorite crochet projects to make. I love the simple stitches in this pattern and with an easy two row repeat they are perfect for any skill level.

I originally designed the Sunshine Dishcloth crochet pattern 2 years ago while I was on vacation in sunny Arizona.

As you can tell from the pictures, I am drawn to variegated yarn but I tried to make at least one washcloth with a solid color so you can see the texture.  Also, I love my new Navy Odyssey hook and I think I have used it daily since I bought it. I like it when my hook matches my project and navy goes nicely with most colors! Do you like to match your hook to your project? (I can’t be the only one?!)

The texture made with this stitch combination is what sparked the idea for the Sunshine Collection. When I fall in love with a certain stitch combination, I like to use it for lots of makes!

Materials
  • Ball of cotton yarn (I Love This Cotton, Peaches & Crème)
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Measuring Tape
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
Abbreviations

CH – Chain
ST(S) – Stitch(es)
HHDC – Herringbone Half Double Crochet
SC – Single Crochet

Notes

This pattern uses American Standard Terms.

You can easily adjust this pattern by chaining an even number. My CH 30 resulted in my dishcloth being 7.5 inches wide and I continued alternating rows 2 & 3 until my dishcloth was square (7.5 inches by 7.5 inches) because that is my preferred size.

You will be placing your SC into the HHDC from the previous row & your HHDC will be placed in the SC from the previous row.

Special Stitch

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, pull that loop through the next loop on your hook (kind of like a slip stitch). This will leave you with two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Pattern

CH 30 (or an even number)

Row 1: HHDC in 2nd CH from hook, * SC in next CH, HHDC in next CH *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row, last ST in row will be HHDC, CH 1, turn

Row 2: SC in 1st ST, * HHDC in next ST, SC in next ST *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row, CH 1, turn

Row 3: HHDC in 1st ST, * SC in next ST, HHDC in next ST *, repeat from * to * to the end of the row, CH 1, turn

Continue to alternate rows 2 & 3, in that order, until you reach your desired size. Fasten off and weave in ends.

My hope is that you will love this dishcloth crochet pattern as much as I do. Feel free to share pictures of your Sunshine Dishcloth and tag me on social media. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram. Please feel free to use the hashtags #alcpatterns and #averylanecreations
