Brimless Beanie Free Crochet Pattern

Beanies are one of my favorites things to crochet, but lets be honest, most people do not like making the brim part. I think I am in the minority when I say that I love the brim part just as much as the hat portion of a beanie. BUT…when I came across a brimless beanie on Pinterest, I knew that I had to make one. I am always designing beanies that are more girly, so I decided I would whip up a brimless one that would be unisex.

This brimless beanie is made from the top down and makes sizing a little bit easier. This pattern is an easy make and so versatile. The pattern is written as small men’s size, but I will go in to details on how to adjust the pattern to make any size you need.

For this pattern, you will need to know how to work an extended single crochet stitch. You can find my video tutorial here.  You will also need to know how to herringbone half double crochet. You can find my video tutorial for this stitch here.

MATERIALS:

132yds/122m worsted weight yarn (ALC Yarns, Caron Simply Soft, Lion Brand Heartland, I Love This Yarn)

I9/5.5mm crochet hook
Measuring tape or acrylic ruler
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Stitch marker or safety pin

ABBREVIATIONS:

CH – Chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet
HHDC – Herringbone Half Double Crochet
ESC – Extended Single Crochet
MC – Magic Circle
SC – Single Crochet
SCBLO – Single Crochet in Back Loop Only
SLST – Slip Stitch
ST(S) – Stitch(es)

Notes:
Use stitch markers to mark the 1st stitch in each round; Count your stitches! Pay special attention on Round 9 – after this round you will no longer increase the amount of stitches you have in each round.

PATTERN:
Start by making a magic circle (MC).

(Increase Rounds)
Round 1: Place 8 HDC in MC, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1. (8)
Round 2: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, 2 HDC in each ST in round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1 (16)
Round 3: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next ST, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next ST, repeat from * to finish round. SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1. (24)
Round 4: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 2 STS, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 2 STS, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1. (32)
Round 5: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 3 STS, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 3 STS, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1 (40)
Round 6: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 4 STS, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 4 STS, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1 (48)
Round 7: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 5 STS, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 5 STS, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1 (56)
Round 8: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 6 STS, *2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 6 STS, repeat from * to finish round, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1 (64)
Round 9: 2 HDC in same ST as CH 1, HDC in next 31 STS, 2 HDC in next ST, HDC in next 31 STS, SLST to 1st HDC, CH 1. (66) **

**at this point the crown diameter of your beanie should measure about 7 inches

(Repeat Rounds)
Round 10: HHDC in same ST as CH 1, HHDC in each remaining ST, SLST to 1st HHDC, CH 1. (66)
Round 11: ESC in same ST as CH 1, ESC in each remaining ST, SLST to 1st ESC, CH 1 (66)
Round 12: Repeat Round 11
Round 13: Repeat Round 11

Keep repeating Rounds 10, 11, 12, & 13 (in that order) until your beanie reaches 9 inches or really close to it. My last round was Round 26 and it was a HHDC Round. Then I worked one more round.

Round 27: SCBLO* in same ST as CH 1, SCBLO in each remaining ST, SLST to 1st SC.  *SC in back loop is optional. You could just work SC or choose to end your beanie at the HHDC round. I like the look that a round of SC gives the beanie so that is why I work mine this way.

Fasten off. Leave a long tail for weaving in ends.

Use my “Easy Guide to Sizing Crochet Hats” to adjust the pattern to make any size that you want.

I made a beanie for a 4 to 5 year old and I used the chart to get the correct size. Here is how it works. Find the size you are needing on the chart and because this is a top down beanie you will look at the “Crown Diameter” section.

For the 4 to 5 year old size, the crown diameter needs to be 6 to 6.25 inches. You will work the increase rounds until the crown diameter reaches 6 to 6.25 inches. For this size, it took me 8 rounds to get a 6 inch crown diameter.

Once you reach the crown diameter that you need, refer to the chart again and find the “Hat Height” section. For the 4 to 5 year old size, the hat height needs to be 7.5 inches. Now, you will work the “Repeat Rounds” of the pattern until your hat reaches 7.5 inches.

At Round 23, my beanie was just under 7.5 inches, so Round 24 was my Single Crochet round and that made my beanie 7.5 inches

Here is the video tutorial on my YouTube channel for this brimless beanie crochet pattern. In the video, I am making a 2-3 month old size.
