Velvet Hair Scrunchies

I recently discovered velvet yarn and I must say, I have a little bit of an obsession with it – I know I will be making a blanket with this yarn very soon!

Once I discovered this yarn, I went to Pinterest to search for “Velvet Yarn Crochet Projects” to find a quick project that I could whip up.  And that’s when I saw them!  ….. Velvet Hair Scrunchies!!  I never thought hair scrunchies would make a comeback! I remember telling myself I would never, ever put one of those bulky things back in my hair.  Well, never say never!  It was love at first sight!

I immediately dug around in my vanity drawer to find a thick hair tie and headed to my crochet room. The first one I made was just double crochets and it turned out cute!  Then I thought, let’s go big or go home right?!?  So, I played around with more stitches to make them bigger.  I ended up with 3 different sizes.

At first I was referring to them as small, medium and large, which is so boring so I posted on my Facebook page that I needed some help naming them. One of my friends came up with the idea for naming them – 1980’s for the biggest one, 1990’s for the medium one and 2000’s for the small one. I thought her idea was cute and funny – maybe it’s because I’m an 80’s child!

Here are 3 different sized velvet scrunchies crochet patterns.  If you need help with how to create these, visit my video tutorial page, I have three easy to follow step by step videos that will show you.

I hope you enjoy making them as much as I do.  If you make any using my patterns, please share pictures with me on Instagram or Facebook. I would love to see them!

Hair Scrunchie Pattern : Size 2000’s (small)

  • Tie yarn to hair tie.
  • Double knot it. Be sure your yarn is on the left and hold it to your hair tie so you can crochet over it.
  • Chain 2.
  • Double crochet over the yarn tail and hair tie until you only have a little bit of the yarn tail showing then scrunch the double crochets back a little so you have more of the yarn tail showing.
  • Place a few more double crochets over the yarn tail and hair tie, then cut the remaining of the yarn tail.
  • Continue double crocheting until you only have a little of the hair tie showing then push back your double crochets to reveal more of the hair tie and double crochet some more.
  • Once you run out of room again, stretch your hair tie twice and push back the double crochets to reveal more of the hair tie.
  • Continue placing double crochets until you run out of room. At this point, you can continue pushing back the double crochets to make them as thick as you want. The more you do this, the more the yarn will scrunch up.
  • Once you are done double crocheting, slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet. Then fasten off.
  • Weave your yarn tail in and out of the top of the double crochets.
  • Once you have a little bit of your yarn tail left just cut it off and stretch the hair tie to be sure none of the tail is peeking out.
