My Favorite Yarns for Beanie Hats
I love yarn so much that if I just wrote a blog post about yarn it would go on for days so, I am going to break it up into sections. I’m going to start with my favorite yarn to use for crocheting beanie hats because I love crocheting beanie hats. I could seriously sit all day long and make beanies. They are just so much fun!
The obsession is real! I almost named my business The Crazy Hat Lady. Seriously! I am so glad I didn’t but I thought it was cute and funny.
I am going to break this into two categories: worsted weight yarn and bulky weight yarn. I love working with bulky weight yarn but I also love the look of beanies made with worsted weight yarn. I will give you my favs in both sizes.
Worsted Weight Yarn
The first beanie hats I ever made were for babies and I used Caron Simply Soft. It is a nice soft yarn and comes in some really pretty colors. It is easy to find too. You can buy it at your local Walmart and it’s also available at Joann’s. Michael’s or Amazon. For me, Walmart is my closest store. That works really well for me; not having to drive over an hour from my home to one of the other popular stores!
I like this yarn because it holds up well to being worn and washed over and over again. The only downside to Caron Simply Soft is it tends to split when you crochet. I’ve learned to be careful with my hook when I’m going into a stitch so I don’t snag my hook on the split yarn. It really isn’t that bad for me because I’m used to it but it is something to watch out for.
My favorite yarns for making child or adult beanies would be I Love This Yarn brand and Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Low-Pill (both found at Hobby Lobby), and Lion Brand- Heartland found at Joann’s and Michael’s. All 3 of these yarns are so nice to work with.
In fact, I designed my Sassy Beanie pattern using nothing but I Love This Yarn brand. I have made every single Sassy Beanie with this brand of yarn because I just love how nice it is and the variety of colors.
The Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Low-Pill is so dreamy to work with. It’s so soft and doesn’t split or get really fuzzy. I just love it. It comes in some really beautiful colors too. The yarn just glides so smoothly over your hands and hook.
Lion Brand Heartland has some gorgeous neutral colors and it works up very nicely. Sadly, I haven’t seen it at my local Walmart but it is a small Walmart so it maybe available in their larger stores.

Bulky Weight Yarn
I love bulky weight yarn. It is what I finally learned to crochet with and I’ve had a soft spot for it ever since. I learned to crochet using Bernat baby blanket yarn, but strangely I have never made a beanie hat with it. It is such a soft yarn I bet it would feel amazing.
My favorite bulky weight yarn for making beanie hats are Lion Brand Hometown USA, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Yarn Bee True Colors and Yarn Bee Dream Spun.
Lion Brand yarns are easy to find and can be purchased at the usual stores – Walmart, Joann’s, Michael’s and Amazon.
Lion Brand is very nice to work with and has held up after many washes. They also have some nice color choices.
Yarn Bee brand is only found at Hobby Lobby. The colors they offer are amazing! The yarn is just so soft and glides over your hook. My only complaint about the Yarn Bee brand is that you don’t get as much yarn in the skeins. For example, I can easily make an adult beanie using Lion Brand yarn and have some yarn left over; whereas with Yarn Bee you would need just over a skein. One time, I didn’t pay attention to the label when I bought the Yarn Bee brand so I was a little sad when I ran out of yarn! However! it is so worth the trouble.
There are so many other brands out there that I haven’t tried yet. I am just one of those people when I find something I like, I just stick to it!
I am sure I will branch out and try other brands, but at this time those are my tried and tested brands that I can highly recommend!

Thanks so much for sharing. I was recently looking for some other bulky weight yearns beside Hometown and Thick & Quick. I love hometown because it’s not wool but is somewhat limited on colors. Thick & Quick has some great colors but I dont like wool and not many in my area do either. So to know theres other yarn such as Yarn Bee is great! I will have to check it out as I’m making stock for inventory. 🙂

I love all yarn but I especially like when you started dying your own, I love to watch the whole process of it then the end result. I’d love to start to dye my own but I have way to much going on in my life so I really enjoy your lives.
