Granny Triangle Shawl Free Crochet Pattern

You know those long days when all you want to do is sit down with your hook and yarn in your hand and just crochet? You just need an easy mindless project that doesn’t take a lot of brain power. I get it!

That’s why I designed this Granny Triangle Shawl! It’s the perfect crochet pattern for those “laid back, I just want to crochet” moments.

I am super excited to share this free crochet pattern with you! You can work this pattern up with any yarn weight and any coordinating hook size of your choice. (I will share my suggestions in the pattern so don’t worry.)

You can totally customize this pattern to how YOU want it. Do you want to work it up all in one color? Go for it! Do you have a bunch of scrap yarn you want to use up? Use it! Do you want a more coordinated palette? Then do it! Do you have mini skein advents that you’ve been itching to use? Use ’em up!

I really should’ve called this the “Let’s not overthink it” pattern! I really want you to have as much fun working it up as I did!

For my first granny triangle shawl, I used forty 10 gram mini skeins. To keep it simple and not overwhelm myself with all the color options. I chose 4 or 5 mini skeins from my stash then paired them based on how I thought they would look best. I would work them up until I ran out then I went back for 4 or 5 more and coordinated them with the previous colors. I just kept repeating that process until the shawl was the size I wanted. Using this laid back process brought me so much joy because my brain can’t help but pair colors so having too many options would have overwhelmed me and shut me down. This  approach allowed me to be creative while still being super laid back with it!

Certainly, there’s nothing more relaxing than a simple double crochet stitch. The only thing that may sound complicated is the stacked double crochet, but I assure you, it’s not complicated at all! If you know how to single crochet, then you can work a stacked double crochet because it’s simply one single crochet stacked on top of another.

I use the stacked double crochet at the beginning of each row because it gives a nice clean edge AND at the end of your next row, you’ll have a dedicated stitch to work into instead of trying to find where the top of your chain stitch is! I explain how to complete the stitch below! Plus I have a step by step video tutorial for the entire pattern on my YouTube channel for the visual learners like me.

My favorite part is you can use any yarn weight. I’ve written this pattern for three different yarn weights: sock / fingering, dk weight, and worsted weight.

This pattern is for all crocheters from beginners to seasoned and all of us that in between!

I could keep chatting about how much I love this pattern but I’m sure you want to get started on your very own Granny Triangle Shawl.

Gauge Swatch Info

Sock / Fingering Weight: Work pattern for 8 rows; Unblocked Swatch Measurements: Spine 4 inches (10cm); Wingspan 7 inches (18cm)
DK Weight: Work pattern for 10 rows; Unblocked Swatch Measurements: Spine 6 inches (15cm); Wingspan 10 inches (25.5cm)
Worsted Weight: Work pattern for 9 rows; Unblocked Swatch Measurements: Spine 6 inches (15cm); Wingspan 10 inches (25.5cm)

Listen, if you don’t want to work a gauge swatch, that’s totally up to you. I get it! Remember, this is a totally laid back pattern If you don’t work a gauge swatch just pay attention to your dimensions and work your pattern to the size YOU want it! I like to think of them as drape swatches. The only reason I made a swatch is to make sure that I liked the drape with the hook size I chose before dedicating hours to a project and not liking the result.
